The most frequent conditions affecting the vertebral column
In face of the several different problems that may affect the column, Dr. Barreto is always prepared to offer the safest and most effective treatment for his patients.
Sometimes incapacitating, this is one of the main causes of back and leg pain. It involves the rupture of the intervertebral ring or disc, which may cause a compression of the spine or nerves, anywhere in the vertebral column.
Spinal stenosis is the narrowing of the vertebral canal, which can be of congenital, acquired or mixed causes. One of its characteristics is leaning forward the upper body to alleviate the pain.
There are many degenerative diseases of the spinal column, most of genetic origin. The degenerative process initiates on the intervertebral disc, starting the so called degenerative cascade: disfunction, instability and stabilization. During this process, there may be pain, incapacity, and nerve compression. The most common disorders are: spondyloarthrosis, stenosis, spondylolisthesis, myelopathy, among others.
The vertebral column may be the site of primary tumors, benign o malignant. Secondary tumors also occur there, consisting most frequently of tumor metastasis, threatening the well -being as well as the life of the patient. Surgery may be necessary.
Among them are scoliosis, hyper- and hypokyphosis. Depending on the case, it is possible to treat, stop the progression of the curvature, and even correct the deformity. Surgery is indicated only on selected or severe cases.
Back pain has different causes, complexities and risk, and may be incapacitating. Its treatment involves rest, medication, and rehabilitation. Percutaneous procedures and surgery may be necessary.
